DVSA Practical Test Booking Changes 2026

DVSA Practical Test Booking Changes

The DVSA introduced several major changes to the practical driving test booking system in 2026 to reduce bots,

Test reselling, and long waiting times.

  1. Learners can now only change a test TWICE

Since 31 March 2026, learners can only change their test booking two times. This includes changing the date,

time, or test centre. If further changes are needed, the learner must cancel and rebook the test and pay again.

  1. Only the learner can book the test

Since 12 May 2026, driving instructors, schools, and third-party companies can no longer book practical tests on

behalf of learners. Learners must personally log into GOV.UK and book the test themselves.

  1. Only the learner can manage or amend the booking

Instructors can no longer swap, move, or cancel tests for pupils. All changes must now be completed directly by

the learner.

  1. Nearby test centre restriction

From 9 June 2026, learners can only move their test to one of the three nearest test centres. This aims to stop

bulk bookings and test reselling.

  1. New declaration and terms

Learners must now confirm they are booking for themselves and agree to new DVSA terms and conditions

Best Tips for Booking a Practical Test

Tip Advice
Best time to book Many instructors report that Monday mornings just before 6:00am are often the best time to find new test slots and cancellations.
Book only when close to test-ready Because learners now only get two changes, it is important not to book too early. A mock test beforehand is highly recommended.
Use the official DVSA website only Avoid unofficial apps or resellers charging excessive fees. Use the official GOV.UK website to book your practical test.
Be flexible Try nearby centres, weekday tests, and midday appointments for better availability.
Keep checking regularly Cancellation slots appear randomly throughout the day, so persistence is important.
Confirm instructor availability Always check that your instructor and vehicle are available before booking the test.

Final Advice

Due to the new DVSA rules, planning ahead is more important than ever. Avoid unnecessary changes, keep your login details safe, and only book when genuinely approaching test standard.
